German Word For Sit – Sitzen, Sich Setzen and Sich Hinsetzen

You might think that German word for sit is sitzen, right?

No and yes.

Sich setzen and sitzen are related, but they describe different actions which confuses many German learners.

So what’s the difference? Sich setzen und sitzen

• sich setzen = to sit down (the act of sitting) → You move your body from standing to sitting.
• sitzen = to be sitting (already sitting) → You are in the seated position.

🪑Sich setzen oder sich hinsetzen – So what’s the difference?

When learning German, you might come across both “sich setzen” and “sich hinsetzen.” They look almost the same – but is there actually a difference? Yes, but it’s a small and easy one!

✅ 1. sich setzen – to sit down (neutral)

This simply means to sit down. It focuses on the action itself — moving from standing to sitting.

Beispiel:

• Ich setze mich auf den Stuhl.
  → I sit down on the chair.

You usually use sich setzen when you mention where you sit (auf den Stuhl, ans Fenster, neben mich etc.).

✅ 2. sich hinsetzen – to sit down somewhere

This also means to sit down, but the little word “hin” adds a sense of direction — like “sit down right here / over there”.

Beispiel:

• Setz dich hin!
  → Sit down (right here)!

You can use it when you don’t mention the place or when you’re asking someone to sit down.

Examples for „sich hinsetzen“

Focus: sitting down somewhere – more general or directional, sometimes without a place mentioned.

1. Bitte setz dich hin!
2. Ich bin müde, ich muss mich kurz hinsetzen.
3. Er kommt nach Hause und setzt sich gleich hin.
4. Kannst du dich hinsetzen und zuhören?
5. Sie setzt sich hin und schreibt eine Nachricht.
6. Ich weiß nicht, wo ich mich hinsetzen soll.
7. Der Lehrer sagt: „Setzt euch hin, wir fangen an.“
8. Nach dem Einkaufen setze ich mich erstmal hin.
9. Setz dich dort hin, das ist dein Platz.
10. Sie seufzt, setzt sich hin und trinkt Kaffee.
